Some of the Basic Tests to Expect in Your Next Visit to the Optometrist:

1. Visual Acuity Test

This is the most common and basic Eyes test that is performed when you first visit the eye doctor. This test is mainly conducted to measure the sharpness of your sight. You will be asked to use one eye at a time and a read few letters on the signboard from a specific distance. The responses of the patients are observed by the optometrist and it helps in determining the vision level of the patients. This type of eye test is safe for children too.

2. Retinoscopy

This is the type of test where you will be asked to look into the thick instrument with several dials and lenses. It is mainly taken to identify the strength of the lens you will require. The equipment used is referred to as a phoropter and it is used by the doctor to conduct the test called retinoscopy. With the help of this test, the optometrist can find out the optimal lens prescription for the patients.

The patient gazed through the equipment and the eye doctor would flip diverse lenses in front of their eyes. Patients need to focus on objects placed in front of their eyes. A beam of light is thrown on the eyes and it helps the doctor to observe how light affects the eyes with diverse lenses.

3. Refraction Test

Along with retinoscopy, the refraction eye test also helps in determining the type of eyeglass you will require. In the test, you will be asked to see into the phoropter and look at different characters on the eye chart located just to your opponent on the wall.

In the test, a series of lens pairs are used and the doctor asks you repeatedly which lens option allows you to see clearly. On the basis of the answer, the doctor determines whether your eyes are affected by astigmatism, nearsighted or farsighted. With the help of this test, you will come to know whether or not prescription vision correction is needed.

4. Keratometry Test

This is the eye test that is performed to measure the shape of the cornea. The shape of the cornea affects how the light perceives and reflects the light. Some of the patients have elongated or steep curves in the cornea which leads to a condition referred to as astigmatism. This is the test that is performed to detect the condition of astigmatism.

In the test, you are asked to gaze at a specialized machine and the doctor adjusts the equipment to align it with the eyes of the patients. Now the optometrist would read the measurements of the equipment which helps them to know the shape of the cornea.

5. Intraocular Pressure Measurement

Intraocular pressure eyes test helps in measuring the force and pressure created by the eye fluid. An abnormal level of pressure in the eyes can prove to be a warning sign of glaucoma. The equipment that is used for testing glaucoma sends a puff of air to the open eyes. The machine helps in measuring the eye pressure according to the eye reaction and its resistance to the pressure of air.

Now after knowing the types of basic eyes test that you will have to undergo when you visit the doctor, it is very important that you do not be hesitant in taking any of these tests.
